Course Objectives

LECTURE HOURS

Lecture hours occur in the studio. Often times, the studio will be rearranged so the focus is on one piece of equipment with ample space to move around it. To make the best use of the lecture hours, homework may be given. This could be anything from just reviewing the exercises which will be covered in lecture to completing a short assignment. It is advantageous to review the materials covered in lecture before the next session.

The time spent in the studio with a teacher or mentor is invaluable.

The teacher/ training curriculum covers everything you need to know about the exercises.

Then, the teacher adds personal experience. As Pilates is not set in stone with one way to perform each exercise, the studio running the training will show how each of the exercises is taught at their studio. Many Pilates exercises are known by several names. The instructor will inform students what to call each exercise at that particular studio. Breathing cues may be different in the curriculum than how your particular studio performs the exercise.

SELF PRACTICE/PERSONAL PRACTICE HOURS

Personal Practice hours are times when students are practicing Pilates. These include group classes, privates, and self-practice. The required practice hours for each module should be performed on the associated apparatus.

Practice hours take place once in-studio lectures have been completed. If say, the Reformer module is split into three weekends, then Reformer practice hours can start after the first weekend.

OBSERVATION HOURS

Observation hours should commence once lecture hours have occurred. It is only applicable to observe classes which correlate to the modules which have been completed. If a trainee has only completed the Mat and Reformer Modules, it does not make sense for them to observe a client on the Cadillac.

One should only observe a session once permission has been given by both the instructor and the client. Clients are paying for their session and the environment. Instructors know their students and how they will react to being observed. Please be respectful of their wishes; observing a session is a privilege.

Occasionally watching videos is acceptable for observation hours, this is up to the Studio Director.

PRACTICE TEACHING HOURS

Practice teaching will start during lecture hours. The teacher trainers will have the trainees read through the exercises and instruct the rest of the group.

Practice teaching can turn into co-teaching towards the end of the program: Two or more students work together to lead a group class while monitored. This helps the students to share and expand their expertise while gaining a different perspective.
